Charles Mingus Documentary Producers seeking funding

Last night I was at a great gig by the Michael Janisch/Aruan Ortiz Group which also featured Greg Osby and Rudy Royston. It’s great to see such names playing gigs in rooms above pubs. However unfortunately on this occasion the lighting was virtually non-existent and I couldn’t get any good images so there will be nothing on my site from this. Pete Bacon may use the one usable (on the web only) image I took. If I say it was taken at 12,800 ASA at f2.8 and a 1/13th of a second then some of you will realise the difficulties I faced. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the music.

I’ll be back taking pictures on Saturday, hopefully, at the Steve Swallow Group gig at the CBSO Centre.

In the meantime I’ve had a communication I’d like to share. Kevin Ellington Mingus (grandson of Charles Mingus) is directing a documentary on his Grandfather entitled “Mingus on Mingus”. Kevin and his colleagues are at the beginning of the production phase of the film and are conducting interviews with people who knew and played with Charles Mingus. They have launched a fund raising campaign through “Kickstarter” and need to reach pleadges of 45,000 dollars by Sunday December 18th if they are to be able to move forward and capture moments that might otherwise be lost.
