Great to have your thoughts again and great to have these photos. Keep well and also keep both photographing and writing.

Totally agree about the band really developing and the positive reaction of a 'different'audience. I think there are a number of bands who can and will attract this kind of audience, Get The Blessing (Hare & Hounds, 28th March) is another. Interesting that these are bands that Jamie Cullum champions on his Radio 2 programme.

[...] Russ Escritt’s choice for his pic of the week is one from the archive: Sam Rivers, from his gig with his Rivbea Orchestra at the CBSO Centre in Birmingham in November 2004. Russ was inspired to look for it after hearing a new Select release by Mosaic Records, three CDs of the Rivbea Orchestra. “They are all previously unreleased and all new stuff. I’m really enjoying it, it’s a fabulous big band,” he writes. Just click on the picture to find Russ’s website with loads of his other pictures plus his blog. Russ has another book of his photographs available to buy. It’s called A Jazz Year In Birmingham and covers September 2009 to August 2010. Get a preview of this and also of his previous collections here. [...]

[...] The trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire has a new album out called When The Heart Emerges Glistening, and listening to it reminded Russ Escritt of how much he enjoyed hearing Ambrose with John Escreet’s band at the CBSO Centre back in October 2008. Thus, this archive image is Russ’s choice for his pic of the week.
I totally agree with your point about the strong rhythmic/funky feel to Big Cat's music and Ruth Goller's contribution to that. I also really enjoyed Tim Giles' drumming very much and it was great to hear him play with a real groove.

[...] Trumpeter and bass player Percy Pursglove is a familiar face on the Birmingham scene. As well as being a strong player he has a vital role as a co-director of the Harmonic Festival (its second run is in September this year). And it’s not just Birmingham he has covered, either. On 9 June, for example, he is down at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Dean Street with The London Trumpet Ensemble, which comprises Percy, Steve Fishwick and Robbie Robson on trumpets, with Michael Janisch on bass, Andrew Bain on drums and Malcolm Edmonstone on piano. There’s also a special guest in trombonist Mark Nightinghale. Russ Escritt’s choice this week from his extensive archive is Percy with the Claudia Quintet at the first Harmonic Festival last year. Just click on the picture to find Russ’s website with loads of his other pictures plus his blog. Russ has another book of his photographs available to buy. It’s called A Jazz Year In Birmingham and covers September 2009 to August 2010. Get a preview of this and also of his previous collections here. [...]
